Make a Pretty: Crochet 101: Granny Square Pattern using the Magic Ring Method*Photo Tutorial*

That was a mouthful of a title…
Sooo… A little birdie told me you wanna learn how to crochet granny squares…

Granny squares are a great way to use up your stash yarn. They can be pieced together to make blankets, pillow covers, teapot cosies, slippers… even clothing! I made this photo tutorial to help you get started!
ROUND 1

Starting your granny square with the magic ring is a great way to eliminate a big hole in the center of any pattern worked in the round. Wrap the yarn around your finger a few times. Then insert your hook as shown. Pull a loop through. Then, ch3. Work 2dc into the ring. ch3. (3dc, ch3) into the ring and repeat twice more, until you have 4 “petals”. Slip stitch into the top of the first ch3. Tie off.

Pull the tail of your magic ring and it will pull the hole in the center closed. Just be careful not to make it too small where it can cause rippling.

ROUND 2
Tie your yarn into any corner. Ch3, 2dc, ch3, 3dc into the corner space. Ch1. (3dc, ch3, 3dc, ch1) into each corner space. Slip stitch into the top of the first ch3, and then tie off.
ROUND 3
1. Tie yarn into any corner. Ch3. 2dc, ch3, 3dc into corner space.
2. Ch 1. 3dc in next ch1 space. Ch1.
3. (3dc, ch3, 3dc in corner space. Ch1. 3dc in next ch1 space. Ch1.) repeat until you reach the first ch3.
4. Slip stitch into the top of it and tie off.

To add more rows, just follow the pattern and add (3dc, ch1) to the additional ch 1 spaces along the sides that are added as you add rows.

So that’s it… now you’re makin grannys! I’m gonna go write another post with a bunch of patterns for fun ways to join them for ya. Cuz pretty soon you will have a pile of them like mine:

Yay! A pile-o-grannys. One more round with grey then the joining begins! #crafting #craft #handmade #diy #wip #purple #mycraftaddiction #crochet #motif #grannysquare #crafternoon
