Make and Take: Granny Square Necklace Tutorial

I love pretties. As a kid I was obsessed with making jewelry. I remember getting little do-it-yourself kits for friendship bracelets in elementary school in the 80’s. I can remember going to Tandy leather in 1992 with my friends to get scraps for my cool hippie bone bead chokers. I took my bead loom everywhere… Even on grateful dead tour! I still have my bead collection from 1994!

These days I’m more obsessed with fibre arts, but occasionally I get out the tools to make a necklace.

I found these pretties in the box, not sure
how they got in here with the tools n stuff…
Tucking those away for some super special project!
For this project, I will be using these pretties:

I tried to make a necklace for Tiny Girl with granny squares last year, but I used a bigger hook so it was waaaaay too big. This time I used a tiiiiiiiiiny hook:

Need help making a granny square? Here’s some crochet 101

So yah. Made a tiny granny square… Then I used my glue gun to glue the granny to a piece of felt.

{But be careful! Use fabric glue if you are not trained on the glue gun. K?}

Then I waited til it cooled, then used pinking shears to cut out around the square. Leave a little bit showing around the edge if you like. Just make sure it’s trimmed kinda close to the edge where you’re going to put the jump rings.

I had 2 jump rings, and some chain.
I put the jump ring in through the corner space in the granny, and then through the felt. Added the chain and closed up the ring. Ditto for the other top corner!

I, of course, MUST use mismatched chain and gaudy clasps. I love how it turned out this time. The key was using the felt on the back! Now I just gotta get a pic of tiny girl wearing it!
 chat soon!
