What to do When You Feel Uninspired

Feeling blah? Not sure how to get back into the flow of happy creativity? Here’s a few of my fave things to do when I feel uninspired or overwhelmed….

1. Move it!  Clean your house, go for a walk, do some yoga that’s targeted just for crocheters {and knitters}…  Yes, Crafting a Green World has a yoga for crafters series with a special edition for us hookers. Listen to music or an inspiring podcast while you move. To crochet or knit is a moving meditation and can help you get centered and inspired. I have a crochet hour scheduled for myself on Monday mornings first thing, to get myself back in the flow of my workweek.

2. Make a smoothie. Throw in some greens, a frozen banana, some chia seeds, some carob {or cocoa} powder, add some honey or agave syrup, ice cubes, some coconut oil, water or almond or coconut milk… blend it up. Or try this yummy recipe from Gluten Free Goddess:

I sometimes find that my brain needs some fuel to work right again. If that doesn’t make you feel better, get one of those fun curly loop-de-loop straws to drink it with. Make enough for a friend. Friends always make me smile, especially while drinking a yummy smoothie.

3. Troll Craftsy for a new class to take. Wanting to learn how to sew? knit a sweater? make handcrafted sugar flowers??

The time is now, get to it. Learning something new will take your mind off your current state of mind. That alone usually does it for me.

4. Make a plan. It’s one of the best ways to stop spinning your wheels. Get real and get your to do list all written out so you can relax a little bit. This productivity kit  from Creative Prints Papery will help. pinky promise.

I find most of my anxiety comes from feeling like I might forget something. And usually after writing it all out, I find that I don’t have as much to do as I thought. Pick something and get started! I try to find some kind of reward to give myself for completing tasks. {like a field trip to the thrift store if I do all my chores} Self parenting myself works. I also put myself in time out… which leads me to the next thing that gets me inspired….

5. Just chill. The most well-known {and most easily forgotten in times of stress} thing aspect of life is that nothing ever stays the same for very long. This time of uninspired-ness shall pass… now, just like it has in the past. Use it to catch up on a nap, daydream, read magazines, stare blankly at walls, snuggle with your kittycat… in other words: decompress. I usually find myself in need of some downtime when I feel a case of the blah’s coming on. This is when my best ideas come… when my mind is open to them, not all wound up on day to day stuff. This may be the most ignored part of the staying creative puzzle.
